Second suspect arrested

30 March 2007

BRUSSELS – The police have now arrested a second suspect of the armed robbery of the AD Delhaize supermarket in Borgerhout. The 26-year-old man from Antwerp was arrested on Thursday and appeared before the investigating magistrate today.

The man has confessed to the crime. He has been in trouble with the law before but never for a violent offence.

Two men held up the AD Delhaize supermarket on De Schans in Borgerhout. When they tried to flee with what they had stolen a shop employee grabbed one of the robbers. His accomplice fired a shot at the employee. The employee was brought to the hospital in critical condition, but is stable now.

A first suspect was arrested on Wednesday evening, 29-year-old Gerry V. from Zele. He was brought before the investigating magistrate on Thursday. The public prosecution department says he was the one who shot at the shop employee, but the authorities do not want to say whether the man has confessed.

Both suspects will appear in court on Tuesday.
