Scouts sick from e-coli

4 July 2007

BRUSSELS – The 40 scouts and group leaders from the Limburg town of Gronsveld who became ill after drinking the water during a camping trip in Belgium were affected by the e-coli bacteria. This has emerged from the first analysis of samples of the water they had drunk, Flemish newspaper De Morgen reported today.

E-coli is a bacteria found in human and animal excrement. The children were taken to hospital with gastrointestinal complaints in the early hours on Monday after drinking spring water.

The scouts and group leaders admitted to hospital were administered fluids and soon released. The group headed home early because of the incident.
