Saint-Gilles prison guards on strike

19 November 2004

BRUSSELS – Staff at Saint-Gilles prison in Brussels went on strike on Friday after a prisoner slashed two guards with a razor blade.

On Thursday, the prisoner was being taken to a care centre outside the jail when he attacked the men.

He had hidden the razor blade in his mouth.

At a meeting on Friday morning, the entire staff at the prison voted to mount a 24-hour strike to show solidarity for their colleagues.

The protest was due to last until 10am on Saturday morning. The police were drafted in to take over prison security.
