Road deaths fall by nine percent

BRUSSELS – Deaths on Belgian roads fell by nine percent between 2001 and 2002 new statistics have shown.

Although the number of accidents rose marginally from 47,444 to 47,619, the number of fatalities dropped from 1,378 to 1,263.

Serious injuries fell from 7,319 to 6,834 in the same time period.

The figures were released shortly after a weekend of road carnage in Belgium where nine people lost their lives and eight were seriously injured.
