BRUSSELS – A record haul of cannabis was discovered by accident this weekend in a Gilly warehouse.
The cannabis seizure, the largest ever seen in the region, was uncovered after a fire broke out on the property.
The warehouse owner from Gilly, near Ath, has been placed under arrest.
The owner has no previous convictions and the identity of the person renting his property is still unknown.
The fire brigade was called to the site at 10am on Sunday and discovered sodium lamps and irrigation equipment suitable for growing the outlawed crop.
The four rooms of the 400 square metre warehouse were filled with 2,131 cannabis plants.
The police also discovered five and a half kilos of dried and packed hashish, ready for sale.
