Record for electronic payments

20 December 2004

BRUSSELS – A record 3.3 million transactions were made via Belgium’s Banksys electronic payment network on the last Saturday before Christmas, it was reported Monday.

Translating into some 6.8 million electronic payments per minute, Banksys was able to cope with the extra burden without any problems.

Just two weeks earlier, Belgium shoppers faced a countrywide collapse of cash card payments, prompting shopkeepers to demand compensation for what they claimed was a 20 percent loss in business.

On Saturday, December 18, however, everything ran smoothly despite the new record achieved.

Between 3.50 pm and 3.55 pm that day, Banksys reported some 200 extra transactions per minute, exceeding the last record ahead of Father’s Day 2003.
