Rail prices to rise

28 October 2004

BRUSSELS – The head of Belgian rail company SNCB has said prices will rise by 4.82 percent in 2005.

Karel Vinck’s announcement comes despite a management contract that forbids
increases over 3.32 percent.

On Friday morning, the SNCB administrative council will look at a plan to
increase tariffs prepared by the management committee of the rail company.

The tariff chart of the SNCB is always prepared in the autumn, to be put into force in February of the following year.

However, this year promises to be more controversial than most.

The SNCB has prepared “exceptional” rises for rail prices, the newspapers from the group Sud Press said on Thursday.
