Prince Laurent not welcome at palace

27 March 2007

BRUSSELS – Prince Laurent is not welcome at the royal palace for the time being and will not be invited to official events, VTM has reported.

Last weekend the whole royal family attended the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of the EU. VTM reports that Prince Laurent and his wife Claire were not invited. King Albert apparently would rather his youngest son did not attend official engagements at the moment.

“It is a punishment for everything that happened with Noël Vaessen”, says Rudi Bogaerts, Laurent’s old teacher. The prince was recently in the news because of his involvement in a fraud case: his villa was renovated with money from the navy.

“Laurent himself doesn’t understand why he’s not welcome,” Bogaerts says. “He doesn’t think he’s done anything wrong.” The prince did not want to comment on the matter at the moment.
