20 October 2004

BRUSSELS – The Belgian post office is introducing a new colour-coded system for mailboxes it claims will allow it to significantly boost the number of letters collected on evenings and weekends.

To improve its service the post office will mark post boxes in orange that are to be emptied between 5pm and 7pm. as well as Saturday morning, and mark those in blue that are to be emptied after 7pm and Saturday mornings.

Mailboxes to be emptied between 10am and 5pm will be marked in red.

The post office predicts that by the end of 2006, some 400 mailboxes in the country will be emptied after 7pm, a fivefold increase over today’s figures.

The mailboxes slated for evening pick-up are mainly concentrated in the large cities.

Currently some 2,400 mailboxes are emptied between 5pm and 7pm on weekdays and Saturday mornings.

The post office said it is reflecting how to ensure to how ensure improved after-hours pick-ups at these mailboxes especially in heavy-traffic areas like train stations and shopping centres.
