BRUSSELS — A suspect who was arrested on Monday for the murder of Joe Van Holsbeeck has reportedly confessed his role in the Brussels Central station killing.
The 16-year-old youth was questioned by police at the federal police offices in Brussels for the entire afternoon on Monday.
The suspect has been identified as the male youth wearing the Nike training jacket. He is reportedly of Polish ancestry.
According to Belgian media reports, the youth is alleged to have confessed his role in the crime.
The second suspect — who is alleged to have actually committed the stabbing murder — is still at large, but has reportedly been identified.
Earlier reports had speculated that both suspects were of North African ancestry, prompting a heated debate about criminal immigrant youths in Belgium.
The questioning on Monday was in response to new testimony from teaching staff in Francophone schools in Brussels.
The public prosecution has refused, however, to confirm media reports.
Justice authorities had been planning to release new video footage of the suspects on Tuesday.
The footage — recorded by surveillance cameras at the pre-metro station Beurs — is said to show the suspects very clearly.
