BRUSSELS – The Brussels public prosecutor wants city police to stop handing out so many traffic fines, it was reported on Tuesday.
La Derniere Heure said that the prosecutor has written to the police patrolling the areas of Uccle, Auderghem and Watermael Boitsfort.
Other police forces are expected to receive similar letters, asking them to stop handing out so many parking tickets and fines for minor traffic offences.
The French-language daily reported: “The prosecutor’s instructions, which seem absurd in the current political context of cracking down on driving offences, have been dictated by the situation on the ground in the city’s courts.”
Since the government introduced its new zero tolerance policy towards motoring offences earlier this year, court officials have been snowed under with paperwork, explained the newspaper.
