Police set for thousands of drink-drive tests

12 December 2005

BRUSSELS – Police expect to undertake 150,000 alcohol tests on drivers in Belgium during the festive season, it was revealed on Monday.

The announcement was made by transport minister Renaat Landuyt, who said the tests would take place between 1 December and 15 January.

Meanwhile, during the ninth “security on the road” event which took place last weekend in West Flanders, out of 1,953 drivers stopped for a test more than 4 percent had consumed more alcohol than at the same time last year.

“It is clear that people should be reminded again that the police take this matter seriously,” said Landuyt.

The number of people charged with drink driving was higher in West Flanders than in the east, where the level remained the same.
