Police in search for new Fourinet victim

BRUSSELS — Police started work on Monday to find a possible murder victim of self-confessed serial killer Michel Fourniret in the Belgian province of Luxembourg.

The search was being carried out in the woods of Sainte-Cécile (Florenville), near the village of Chassepierre in the south-east of Belgium.

A witness claims he saw someone digging a grave-sized hole in the woods in the 1990s, and has clearly identified the site.

Various police teams were involved in the search, which started at about 10am, newspaper ‘Het Laatste Nieuws’ reported.

Authorities were scheduled on Monday to clear the region of trees and undergrowth where the excavation works will start.

The actual search for a murder victim will not start until Wednesday, when tracker dogs will be called in.

Fourniret was arrested in Belgium in June 2003 and has confessed to almost 10 murders.

The killings are said to have occurred in the 1980s and 1990s.
