BRUSSELS – A pit bull owner was ordered to appear before a Ghent court on Friday after his dog viciously attacked and seriously injured a man.

The incident occurred on Thursday night on Langerbruggestraat street in the town of Oostakker near Ghent, Belga news agency reported Friday.

The victim suffered severe wounds to his face and neck and was transported in critical condition to the local Jan Palfijn hospital.

Medical personnel initially had trouble rushing to the victim’s aid as they threatened by the dog. But police officers who also soon arrived on the scene of the attack immediately put the animal down.

The owner was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. He was apprehended by police and summoned to the Ghent court.
