Peyo alias Pierre Culliford
Pierre Culliford was the son of an English father and a Belgian mother. He was born in Brussels in 1928. He took the name ‘Peyo’ early in his professional career, based on an English cousin’s mispronunciation of Pierrot (a diminutive form of Pierre).
He made his first comics for the newspaper La Dernière Heure. He also created The Smurfs.
The auction at Millon auction house yielded a total of one million euros. Ninety percent of the pieces on offer were sold.
