Peeters to be new minister president

21 June 2007

BRUSSEL – Flemish Minister for Public Works, Energy, the Environment and Nature Kris Peeters (Flemish Christian Democrats CD&V) will succeed Yves Leterme as minister president of the Flemish government. Het Laatste Nieuws reported this on the basis of “an extremely reliable source.”

A date for the handing over of power has not yet been set, but will in any event be before the Flemish holiday on 11 July. It could take place as early as next week, when two new CD&V ministers are appointed.

This will be another big step in a whirlwind political career for Kris Peeters (45). Yves Leterme seduced him away from the Unizo organisation for the self employed in 2004. Peeters was elected to Parliament for the first time in the most recent elections.
