Peer hit by whirlwind

The Limburg town of Peer has been hit by a whirlwind. In borough of Grote Brogel, several houses were hit; many of them suffered great damage.

A great many roofing tiles were blown off rooftops and one greenhouse has been completely devastated.

The local fire brigade was called out at 11.45 pm late yesterday evening. Many other calls from worried locals were to follow.

“At first we thought a car had run into our house”, one man said. “But it was only the storm. Part of our roof has gone, and so have the carport and stables. It all happened in just a few seconds.”

In the small hours of the morning, the fire brigade was still working to repair the roofs. It is believed that the repairs and cleaning up will take up the best part of the day and may even have to be continued tomorrow.

Fortunately, the whirlwind only caused material damage and no one got hurt.
