BRUSSELS – More and more people are paying for parking via sms. In the seven months since the system was introduced 180,000 payments via sms have already been received.

On average just over 10 percent of all parking payments take place via sms. “Every day we have about 180 new users and about 2,000 transactions,” said alderman for urban development Ludo Van Campenhout (Flemish Liberals Open VLD).

To pay for parking via sms, the driver must send an sms text message to 3311; the text message must report the number on the parking ticket machine and his own license plate number.

When leaving the parking place the driver must send an sms text including the word “stop” to the same number.
