Belgiums brand new music festival, Paradise City, is gearing up for what promises to be a spectacular first edition on 4–5 July. Even now, well before it kicks off, the eco-friendly boutique festival has attracted international admirers: The Guardian has recommended Paradise City as one of the 10 European festivals not to de missed this summer. Another 18 names have been announced, including Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Tiger and Woods, Robosonic and Doctor Dru, and more sustainability measures have been added to the green agenda, such as carpooling with Uber and 100 percent electric transport for artists.
Green DNA
Paradise City is green through and through, and sustainability is the key concept that resonates through every aspect of the festival. The starting point for this approach is a partnership with the Belgian company CO2Logic, advising Paradise City on every step it takes to reduce (and offset) the festivals CO2 emissions. The result is a growing list of sustainability measures.
Previously announced ecological measures include vegetarian festival food, ecological toilets, green energy, filtered tap water, reusable cups and a well-considered waste management policy that involves a chicken coop and a compost corner at the festival site. Furthermore there are special benefits for carpoolers, cyclists and people who travel by public transport. Its CO2 reduction efforts and commitment to carbon offsetting have bagged Paradise City the CO2 Neutral Festival certificate.
New carpooling with Uber: Get a free ride
A unique feature for this Belgian festival is the carpooling service from Brussels offered by Paradise City and Uber, the mobile app that connects riders with drivers. Uber will transport a minimum of three people per vehicle between Brussels and Perk for free. All you need to do is order a ride and share it through the Uber app with two other people. For both partners, the aim of this partnership is to further reduce CO2 emissions. This carbon-neutral carpooling service is not only intended for festival-goers living in Brussels, but for everyone coming to Paradise City via the capital.
New campsite
As an alternative to travelling back and forth and making unnecessary trips, Paradise City will be setting up a campsite next to the festival grounds. This campsite provides all your creature comforts, including a Mild Mornings breakfast by Alpro. Places are limited, and there is a charge for using the campsite; practical information will be published on the website soon.
Eco-friendly flyers
How eco-friendly can a flyer be? What about one that gives something back to nature? Paradise City has decided to invest in printing flyers on seed packets: not just something you throw away on the street, but an item you can even use to create your own little piece of paradise. The seeds can be planted until August and will sprout into Phacelia flowers: this bee-friendly plant produces a lot of nectar, provides excellent ground cover and also attracts useful insects.
