4 May 2004

BRUSSELS – Over seven and a half million people have registered to vote in next month’s regional and European elections in Belgium, it was confirmed on Tuesday.

The two polls will take place on the same day, 13 June, and a high turnout is expected as voting in Belgium is compulsory.

According to official figures 7,493,821 Belgians have registered to vote in the two polls.

Their numbers will be swelled by almost 60,000 expat voters from the European Union who take part in the elections for the European Parliament.

The authorities estimate that these voters will cast a total of 15 million ballot papers.
