Opel still on strike

9 May 2007

ANTWERP – The Opel plant in Antwerp will be on strike today again, socialist trade union ABVV announced after a meeting at the plant late last night.

The night shift itself indicated the strike would continue despite the promise that two models would be manufactured at the Antwerp plant. The morning and day shifts will continue the strike after an information session on the future of the business.

The unions say that the continuation of the strike is due to a lack of confidence in the company leadership. Management had initially rejected offhand a proposal from the unions that a referendum among all the workers be held on Thursday. A compromise was reached in the end and the referendum will in fact take place on Thursday morning.
