‘One World: Many Stories’ is the theme for The British School of Brussels’ (BSB) 16th biennial Book Week from 11 – 15 October 2010. Twelve authors, performance poets and illustrators from around the globe will spend several days with both Primary and Secondary School students, taking part in workshops, presentations and performances. This is a whole School event devoted to inspire and encourage children of all ages to read and write creatively.
Dedicated to the School’s first Principal
The School’s tradition of Book Week is dedicated to Alan Humphries, OBE, the School’s first Principal, who died in 1997. ‘Alan loved literature and reading’ Hilary Vervaeck, former Primary School teacher reflected; ‘he read English at Oxford and began his career as a teacher of English. When he was given the opportunity to found and develop a school, his love of reading and recognition of its importance were fundamental to every decision concerning the spirit of BSB. Book Week is devoted to his memory’, she said.
‘I started my own career as an English teacher at BSB when Alan Humphries was Principal.’ Brenda Despontin, Principal at BSB said. ‘My own passion for reading remains as strong as ever, and it is particularly pleasing to see such a rich and varied programme for this year’s Book Week, particularly those opportunities for broadening our students’ international awareness. I am grateful to those who ensure this special BSB event is always inspirational and memorable.’
