One killed as heavy rain, winds lash Belgium

Heavy rains and strong winds that lashed Belgium Wednesday left one person dead and caused transport mayhem in Brussels and in the southern Wallonia region, local media said.

A trucker died when a tree crashed on his vehicle in the southwestern Erquelinnes region, Belga news agency said. The weather also delayed flights at Brussels, an airport spokesman said.

Traffic was disrupted in the capital by flooding. Tunnels were closed and many roads were blocked by felled trees. Buses and trams were delayed.

In Wallonia, the roof of a gymnastics centre caved in, injuring eight people. There were more than 100 children inside at the time.
