One in ten Flemish kids end up in A&E

Published on 22/04/2009

A study published in the scientific journal ‘Trends voor Specialisten’ has revealed that more that one in ten Flemish children end up receiving treatment in the accident and emergency units of the region’s hospitals.

Most of those receiving treatment in A&E units have sustained minor injuries such as cuts and grazes orhave sprained their wrist of ankle.

However, in around 10% of cases, a child enters hospital with serious or even life-threatening injuries.

Doctor Patrick Van de Voorde of the Accident and Emergency Unit of Ghent University Hospital told VRT that such children don’t always get the best treatment.

Hospital doctors are often not well-trained to deal with seriously injured children.

Children often need extra help to get over the trauma of an accident.
