One in four parents unhappy with childcare

23 March 2004

BRUSSELS – A quarter of parents living in Brussels are not happy with the city’s pre-school childcare facilities, according to a new survey published on Tuesday.

The study, by the Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), found that 27 percent of parents who have children younger than three were not happy with the childcare options open to them.

The study showed that some parents wanted to look after their children at home but were not able to, while others could not find suitable crèches.

Around a third of parents who wanted to enrol their children in state-sponsored crèches said they could not, usually because no places were available.

For parents who wanted to look after their children at home but could not, most said work commitments prevented them from exercising their preferred childcare choice.
