Oldest thief in Belgium gets 6 months

16 May 2007

BRUSSELS – The court in Louvain has sentenced Anderlecht resident Ronny Meyers to a prison sentence of six months and a fine of EUR 275.

The 80-year-old man had stolen money from the collection plates at several churches.

Meyers’ attorney had asked that the man not be sentenced to any additional prison time because the appeal court in Antwerp had already put him in prison for one month for similar offences. The court in Louvain did not see reason to grant this request.

Pirard has been convicted more than 40 times for stealing in the course of his life.
