Old-age home evacuated after gas leak

31 July 2007

BRUSSELS – The 150 residents of the old-age home in Roosdaal in Vlaams-Brabant have all returned to their rooms after being evacuated this morning because of a gas leak. The leak has been stopped, local police report.

The residents of the home were given temporary shelter at an assisted living facility. Police commissioner Roland Hollevoet says the elderly residents were able to return to their home without incident.

The gas leak in the Gasthuisstraat occurred at about 7.30 am when a mechanical shovel hit the gas pipeline. The emergency services decided to evacuate the residents of the old age home since the pipeline is located in front of the institution. The fire brigades of Halle and Lennik assisted in the evacuation.

The leak was fixed shortly before 9 am. The fire brigade ventilated the buildings of the old-age home and helped residents return.
