BRUSSELS – Patches of fuel oil have been washed up along a two-kilometre stretch of the beach in the Belgian resort of Nieuwport, it was reported on Monday.
The pollution was discovered at around 9.30am and the fire brigade and local volunteers have already begun trying to clean up the oil.
The patches of fuel oil are between five and 15 centimetres wide.
It is not yet clear where the oil came from but samples have been taken away for analysis.
