No more Belgian lace for Bruges?

The Lace Centre is a non profit outfit and is based in the home of Belgian lace, Bruges.

The centre has been running for four decades now and has an international reputation. It is responsible for the training of lace-makers.

The centre is being forced to close after the provincial authorities decided to stop subsidising it. It has failed to find a new source of funding.

It was already facing financial problems. The centre’s director, Noël Dumon, says he is disappointed: "Few people in Bruges know and realise that the centre has an international reputation. Wherever you go – and I have many international contacts – you see that we are in top place. We’re seen as a world symbol for lace."
