No investigators to Montenegro

6 March 2007

BRUSSELS – The investigating magistrate in Bergen Pierre Pilette has decided not to send any Belgian investigators to Montenegro to question Smalje Tulja as long as there are no concrete indications that the man actually lived in Bergen and can be linked with the killings there in the 1990s.

Smalje Tulja, who has been charged in New York with killing his girlfriend Mary Beal, denies any involvement in the killings he has been accused of and refuses to answer questions from investigators.

“We haven’t found anything that shows connections with Bergen,” explained Dominique Francq, the deputy in charge of the case. “We have to have other tangible elements before we consider this kind of mission,” he added.
