No 30kph signs around quarter of schools

30 August 2006

BRUSSELS — In more than a quarter of Belgian school zones there are no signs indicating a 30km speed limit, despite the fact the signage is now compulsory.

Consumer watchdog Test-Aankoop investigated the new regulation a year after the 30km/h zones were introduced around the nation’s schools.

The municipalities of Haacht, Diepenbeek and Wetteren performed the best, while Brussels was the worst region.

Test-Aankoop said speed limit signs have been installed around just 36 percent of schools in Brussels.

But there has been an improvement, news agency Belga reported on Wednesday.

Some 74 percent of Belgian municipalities have erected 30km/h speed limit signs around schools compared with 27 percent a year ago.
