New strike at Volkswagen

26 February 2007

BRUSSELS – The workers on the morning shift at Volkswagen in Vorst went on strike unexpectedly on Monday morning again. They are blocking part of the assembly line, a trade union source reports.

The trade union representatives at the company have started talks with the workers on strike, the same source said.

Another trade union source reports that the strike was started by workers who are annoyed that they were not consulted for the works council meeting called for today.

This meeting is to discuss an extension of the working week from 35 to 38 hours in order to achieve cost cuts of 20 percent and in doing so guarantee the future of 2,200 jobs.
