New leader forBrussels region

13 February 2004

BRUSSELS – A new leader for Belgium’s Brussels region was appointed on Friday following the shock resignation of his predecessor over tax irregularities.

Jacques Simonet from the French-speaking liberal party MR will take over from Daniel Ducarme, who resigned on Thursday after it was revealed he owed the Belgian authorities around EUR 184,000 in unpaid taxes.

Simonet had to resign as Belgium’s secretary of state for European affairs to take up the post of Minister President of Brussels.

His departure from the federal government had a knock on effect and prompted a minor cabinet re-shuffle.

Simonet has been Minister President of Brussels before.

He held the post for a little over a year between July 1999 and October 2000.
