New computer crime warning

30 October 2004

BRUSSELS – The Federal Computer Crime Unit (FCCU) has warned of a new internet scam that is proving costly for consumers.

Spam emails are being sent out with the message “good news”, which tells the receiver that a prize of between EUR 25 and 400 can be won if the number 0909 is dialled.

However, dialling the number costs a pricey EUR 25 and is judged fraudulent in the eyes of the law.

The alert was raised by someone who was caught out and three other attempts were thwarted.

The number was blocked and an enquiry launched to investigate this kind of fraud.
