BRUSSELS – The new American ambassador to Belgium, 78-year-old Sam Fox, has officially taken office after submitting his credentials to King Albert II, the US embassy in Brussels has announced.

Fox is the son of a Ukrainian immigrant and businessman who set up the Harbour group, which also has locations in Europe.  He succeeds Tom Korologos as ambassador to Belgium. Korologos has resigned in order to work for a Republican presidential candidate.

The appointment of Fox, one of the largest financial contributors to President George Bush’s Republican Party, was finally pushed through despite staunch resistance from the Democrats, who have controlled the US Congress since the elections last November.
