Nelson Mandela to be honoured across Flanders

The West Flemish towns Kortrijk and Ostend were quick off the mark. Kortrijk is looking at plans to name a square after the South African statesman, while the seaside resort of Ostend is even thinking of naming a bridge after the great man. Ostend might even rename its celebrated railway station and erect a statue of Nelson Mandela in front of the building.

In Mechelen there are plans to name a sports hall after the South African. The naming ceremony will be the kick-off of celebrations to mark a half a century of diversity in Flanders.

Ghent too is looking at the idea of naming a square after Madiba.
