Mother of dead child remains in custody

9 May 2007

BRUSSELS – Béatrice B., who is in prison on suspicion of killing her three-year-old son, did not ask the court in Bergen for her release on Wednesday, according to her lawyer, Séverine Cornille.

The lifeless body of the child was found in the family home in Boussu last Friday.

“My client thought it would be unreasonable to ask for her release after the investigation has only be running a few days, and that it was therefore too early,” the lawyer explained.

“She is determined to fight tooth and claw so that the whole truth is brought to light. She is vehement about her innocence,” Cornille added.

The lawyer says B. is very hurt at what has been said in the media.

The toddler’s mother asked the examining magistrate for permission to attend her son’s burial at the Saint-Géry church in Boussu on Thursday. If her request is granted the prison will allow her to attend the funeral accompanied by a guard.
