Most Belgians support smoking ban
29 May 2007
BRUSSELS – The majority of Belgians (85 percent) supports the smoking ban in restaurants. More than half (61 percent) would also like to see a smoking ban introduced at cafes. This emerged on Tuesday from a survey commissioned by the Cancer Foundation.
It was the first time that such a survey was carried out since the smoking ban for restaurants came into effect on 1 January 2007.
Just under half (47 percent) thinks that non-smoking regulations at restaurants diminish the hospitality in the catering sector, 49 percent think it has made restaurants less hospitable.
The Cancer Foundation wants a general ban on smoking and is calling on politicians to bring a general ban into force as soon as possible.
