BRUSSELS — Six out of every 10 Belgians admit they drive quicker than 125kmh on the nation’s motorways, a survey has revealed.

About three-quarters also said they have never been tested for drink driving, while barely half of those surveyed admitted they don’t sear a seatbelt when in the back seat of a car.

The large-scale survey was conducted by the Belgian Institute of Traffic Safety in 2003. Motorists were questioned about the attitudes to drink driving, speeding and seat belts.

The institute said the results of the survey indicate a lot of work still needs to be done to improve road safety attitudes, newspaper ‘Het Nieuwsblad’ reported on Wednesday.

Despite the fact the number of drink-driving tests has increased in recent years, motorists do not appear to be convinced the chance of being caught is any greater.

Some 44 percent of those surveyed said the chance of being tested is very small or small. And 76 percent said they had never been tested.

According to the traffic safety institute, more drink and drug driving tests are needed.

Meanwhile, the survey also showed 56 percent of Belgians drive too quickly, admitting that they drive 5kmh above the speed limit. On motorways, that percentage increases to 62 percent.
