More Belgian beers heading down under

27 February 2004

BRUSSELS – Australians will soon be able to savour the delights of two of Belgium’s best-known beers thanks to a new deal between Belgian brewing giant Interbrew and its Australian counterpart Carlton United Breweries (CUB), the two companies announced on Thursday.

Under the deal CUB will have the right to import Hoegaarden and Leffe and sell the two brands in bars across Australia until 2012.

In 2002, CUB and Interbrew signed a similar deal to that saw Interbrew’s Stella Artois beer go on sale in Australian pubs and bars.

In a statement released on Thursday Interbrew said the Australian luxury been market, of which CUB controls over 55 percent, is growing by 12 percent a year.
