United Kingdom More aggression and disturbances reported on De Lijn
The Flemish local transport company De Lijn uses a Safety Monitor to measure cases of aggression and disturbances on buses and trams. Last year the number of cases rose by 29%. De Lijn stresses that this need not necessarily mean that there have been more cases as it recognises a greater willingness to report incidents among its drivers. In 2014 De Lijn also introduced the new category 'disturbance' that led to a rise too.
The number of attacks on drivers rose from 1,924 in 2013 to 1,974 last year. In contrast fewer days off work were lost as a result of attacks on drivers and fell from 1,866 days in 2013 to 748 in 2014. The cost of drivers being unable to work also dropped from 490,000 euros in 2013 to less than 200,000 euros last year.
The Safety Monitor shows that aggression and disturbances are concentrated in only 1% of all neighbourhoods. Flemish Mobility Minister Ben Weyts: “Additional safety measures are not required in 99% of neighbourhoods. Temporary or permanent additional safety measures are needed in only 1% of areas.”
