Mobile calls under threat in Brussels?

Belgium’s three mobile phone operators are up in arms as a result of the plans of the Brussels Government to limit the radiation norms of mobile phone masts in the capital.

From 15 March radiation from a mobile phone mast will not be allowed to exceed 3 volts. Because of health concerns, the Region is lowering the power mobile phone masts are allowed to use.

To maintain their network the mobile phone operators say that they will have to put up more masts. If not, they say, phone calls will be interrupted half way through.

The Brussels Environment Minister Evelyne Huytebroeck (Francophone Green), who was instrumental in bringing about the change, doesn’t understand what the problem is. The same norms are applied in Paris, she says.

Earlier the Flemish Parliament adopted a resolution calling for a similar 3 volt norm, but the Flemish Government still has to implement the measure.

The Belgian Telecom Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne (Flemish Liberal) is calling for a workable solution and for Belgium’s three regions to agree on a single radiation norm.
