BRUSSELS – The Brussels regional minister in charge of transport has said he will spend EUR 11 million to make the capital more cycle-friendly.
Pascal Smet said on Friday that the money would be used for a whole variety of pro-bike projects including a plan to create a 320 kilometre regional network of cycle tracks.
The capital region’s current cycle track network covers just 90 kilometres.
Other initiatives include a project to create eight ‘bike points’ around the capital region, where it will be possible to park and hire bikes and also to have cycles repaired.
Smet also promised to make it easier for cyclists to take their bikes on Brussels’ trams and metros.
The minister said that the new pro-bike initiatives would be phased in over the coming five years.
