Marktrock Leuven Festival Closing

6 February 2007

BRUSSELS — The Marktrock Leuven city festival is closing. After 24 years of its existence, the organising team has decided to put an end to this beautiful summer tradition.

The festival will become history, mainly due to financial problems and tough competition from similar events, organiser Guido Hoeven told De Standaard.

The organisers say they will now try to create an alternative in the style of the Beleuvenissen, a yearly four-day summer festival.

Marktrock was a significant event in the musical world, featuring Elvis Costello, James Brown, Texas, Iggy Pop, the Pet Shop Boys, Praga Khan and Moloko.

24 years ago it was launched as a free festival where beginning musicians (among them the now legendary Clouseau) performed.
