Mariusz O. not handed over

29 March 2007

BRUSSELS – The juvenile court in Brussels has decided that 17-year-old Mariusz O. will not be handed over to the crown court. As a result, O. will not have to answer in criminal court for his part in the murder of Joe Van Holsbeeck.

Mariusz is one of the two boys who stabbed Joe Van Holsbeeck in the Brussels central station in April 2006. Van Holsbeeck died as a result of the stabbing.

Mariusz did not deliver the fatal stab wound but was involved in stealing the MP3 player from Van Holsbeeck.

The public prosecution department had asked that the Polish boy be handed over but the juvenile court says that he is eligible for counselling and reform.

O. has reportedly shown sincere remorse for his actions and acknowledged his part in the incident. Various reports on the boy say he is in need of further counselling, education and psychological help.
