Map leads police to skulls

23 April 2007

GHENT – At about 3 pm on Saturday an unknown individual passed by a police station in the city centre and dropped off an envelope containing a map, a photo and a note indicating that human skulls could be found at the specified location.

The police are investigating the case and the public prosecution department has been informed. The authorities called in a court medical specialist on the case as well.

Pieces of skulls were indeed found at the location indicated, an industrial park between the Ringvaart, the E40 and the Zwijnaarde canal. Police suspect that the skulls are from humans but the authorities say this is by no means certain.

The prosecution office wants to wait until further examination of the skull fragments is carried out before commenting further.
