BRUSSELS – The young man who killed his 19-year-old girlfriend in their apartment on the Bennesteeg in Ghent on Friday night committed suicide in prison over the weekend.
22-year-old Bert V.D.V. hanged himself in his cell on Saturday night, most likely between 10.30 and 10.45 p.m., the Ghent public prosecution department reports. He had confessed and was being held on murder charges.
The young man had been under increased surveillance. Guards checked on him every 15 minutes but he nonetheless found the chance to take his own life.
An autopsy on the 19-year-old woman’s body on Sunday revealed that he had strangled the woman.
