Low voter turnout in Belgium

7 May 2007

BRUSSELS – The French nationals in Belgium did not turn out at the voting stations in large numbers to vote for a new president.

Preliminary figures from the French consulate general in Brussels indicate that 52.8 percent voted. These are preliminary results since the figures from Ghent and Bergen had not yet been received.

The results in Belgium were similar to the general results: 53.38 percent of the French nationals in Belgium voted for right-wing Nicolas Sarkozy; 46.51 percent voted for his socialist opponent Ségolène Royal.
