Long-awaited road works in Brussels in 2007

BRUSSELS – The Brussels City Council is to embark on long-awaited and extensive road works valued at EUR 4.5 million in 2007.

Part of the works will see the L’Avenue des Croix de Guerre – which is located between Rue Général Biebuyck and Rue Vekemans in Neder-over- Heembeek – completely overhauled at the start of next year.

Workers will then turn their attention to several surrounding streets and the nearby Place Peter Benoît.

The project will involve the removal of a 100 trees, the roots of which have raised parts of the pavements. These will all be replaced at the completion of road works.

The construction works have long been anticipated by residents, many of whom had complained about speeding cars.

These concerns were acknowledged by Brussels City Council, which has incorporated the construction of two new roundabouts and an elevated road surface in the plans.

In addition, a cycle track protected on both sides will also serve to slow down drivers in the district.

Other works planned for 2007 include face-lifts for Rue François Vekemans, Rue Leon XIII and Rue de la Trois Pertuits.

The entire project is estimated to cost around EUR 4.5 million.

Later in 2007, the refurbishment of Place Peter Benoît will begin. The project – approved by Brussels at the beginning of March – will ensure a single stop for trams 47 and 53 (on Rue Vekemans) and a new one-way diversion for motorists.

Widened pavements, pedestrian crossings and speed bumps are also planned.

A call for public approval is expected in coming weeks.
