Liberals want voting requirement lifted

20 June 2007

BRUSSELS – During his meeting with informateur Didier Reynders (MR), Open VLD chairman Bart Somers stressed that scrapping compulsory voting is a priority.

The liberals have long urged that the voting requirement be abolished, but the socialists in particular are opposed to this.

Reynders will report to the king today on this week’s talks.

He wants to meet with the party chairpersons once again at the end of June. For the time being he has only concluded that the francophones are not inclined to comply with the Flemish call for state reform.

Somers said on current affairs programme Terzake on Tuesday that he will join Karel De Gucht and Patrick Dewael to form the Open VLD delegation if negotiations are to follow.
